DeepSouthCon (DSC) is a traveling convention held in the states of the former Confederacy. The first DSC, at Dave Hulan's house in Huntsville, AL, in 1963, had five or 12 members, depending upon what source one believes. Its goal was to give Southern fen, traditionally very isolated and in touch only through fanzines, a place to meet face to face. After its small start, it expanded steadily and inspired the founding of a number of Southern local conventions. Since 1990, it has usually been held in conjunction with an established con.
By-laws for the DSC were adopted in 1986. The con site is selected two years in advance by vote of the members of the current convention. The Phoenix and Rebel Awards for lifetime achievement as a Southern pro and fan, respectively, are presented at the con's awards ceremony.
