Yandro

Yandro was an important fanzine published from 1953 to 1986 by Buck and Juanita Coulson, with 259 issues in all.

It began as the clubzine of the Eastern Indiana Science Fiction Association (EISFA), and was so named EISFA and edited by Juanita (then Wellons) and Beverly Amers (later DeWeese). By the late ’50s it had completed turning into Yandro.

Yandro won the Hugo for Best Fanzine in 1965, and was a nominee 10 years in a row. Yandro's title came from a story by Manly Wade Wellman. The fanzine's content covered a wide range of topics, including Buck Coulson's excellent reviews of fanzines and a lively lettercol.

The Coulsons were generous in adding to their mailing list, so Yandro was among the first fanzines received by many a neofan.

The zine was excellently mimeographed (by Juanita, who also skillfully handstenciled the art) on a distinctive mustard-colored Twil-tone that came to be known as “Yandro yellow.”

In Charles Fort Never Mentioned Wombats, Coulson had one of his characters describe Yandro as "a sort of Galapagos tortoise among fanzines, having plodded along the beaches of fandom under its hard-shelled editor since practically the dawn of civilization."

Film critic and one-time fan Roger Ebert wrote:

Locs (letters of comment) were the currency of payment for fanzine contributors; you wrote, and in the next issue got to read about what you had written. Today I can see my name on a full-page ad for a movie with disinterest, but what Harry Warner or Buck Coulson had to say about me — well, that was important.
