Quantum
(Did you mean a different Quantum?)
A semiprozine (or very slick fanzine) first edited, then edited and published by Doug Fratz from 1973 to 1993 with 44 issues published (issues 43 and 44 combined as a double issue). The first 35 issues were titled Thrust. Issues 36 to 43 were titled Quantum. The first five issues (volumes 1 and 2) were edited by Fratz as a clubzine of the University of Maryland SF Society.
After Fratz graduated from University of Maryland, Stephen Goldstein became editor for issue six with the club listed as publisher. For that issue, Fratz was listed as editor emeritus. After a year's gap in publication, Fratz returned as editor and publisher with issue seven, which includes his account of the magazine's history and plans for the future. "The magazine, starting with the Fall 1967 issue, will change into a slicker semi-pro sf magazine along the lines of Algol and SF Review." That issue also includes a full page advertisement for Counter Thrust, described in the editorial as annual companion to Thrust.
Columnists and other writers included Jessica Amanda Salmonson, Poul Anderson, Gregory Benford,David Bischoff,Michael Bishop, Richard Geis, Charles Platt, Darrell Schweitzer, Charles Sheffield, John Shirley, and Ted White,
Artists included Grant Canfield, Jack Gaughan, and Dan Steffan, among many others.
Using separate title searches for Thrust and for Quantum, supplemented by title sorting, issues except numbers 1 and 2 were accessible at the Internet Archive in March 2025.
