Ted Forsyth

(???? ā)
Ted Forsyth was a UK fan originally from Edinburgh and then London, active in the 1960s. He was a member of the BSFA, the Science Fiction Club of London (SFCoL) and IPSO.
Skyrack #13 (February 1960) reported that Forsyth would be visiting London and #15 said he would be relocating after securing a job. He shared accommodation with fellow Scot Joe Patrizio and they were later joined by Bruce Burn from New Zealand. He joined the SFCoL and quickly became an active member. In 1961 he became the Club's treasurer and later took on the same role for the BSFA. He was also a member of IPSO, and with Patrizio took over its administration from mailing 1 when co-founder George Locke was posted to Kenya on national service. Forsyth was UK representative for the Parker Pond Fund. In 1962 he became chairman of he SFCoL.
Forsyth was a regular attendee at Eastercons from 1960 to 1964. At RePetercon, the 1964 Eastercon, he served as auctioneer and 'won plaudits for the brisk manner in which he moved the lots' (Skyrack #65). He reprised the role at Loncon II where he was also one of the judges for the artshow. The report in Skyhack #3 (May 1964) that he and Peter Mabey had produced a fanzine called Computer in which a feature article 'covers 17 pages with the first 32 million decimal places of the value of pi' shouldn't be taken too seriously.
References to Forsyth diminish after the mid-1960s. It is thought that at some point he returned to Scotland; Atom Abroad also mentions Forsyth among those who send him off on his trip: 'He'd been away up in Scotland on holiday but came back a day early'.
Patrizio recalled in a LoC to Prolapse #6 'Ted Forsyth had a BSc and an MSc when he went to London' in the context of this being rather rare in fandom then. A letter from Forsyth was published in Relapse #19 (Spring 2011) and this implied he had worked in a London university engineering department and he had taken early retirement at least twelve years earlier.
