(For other imaginary entities, see Utopia.)
Utopian was a fanzine published by R. J. Banks of Corsicana, TX.
Orb #3 (February 1952) described it as 'a very nicely offseted little one-man zine. 25¢.' It seems that only the first issue was printed as other sources describe Utopianas mimeod and the eleventh issue of explicitly identifies itself as 'The Mimeographed Fanzine'. The Operation Fantast Handbook for 1953 added that Promag Parade was issued separately on off-months as a supplement [although apparently only once], issues were typically about 50 pages, mimeod, and contained fiction and reviews. During 1952 there was one 'all-professional' issue. 'Very good item', it said. #11 reported that Richard Bergeron had 'volunteered to join my art staff'.
Science Fantasy Bulletin #9 (October 1952) offers some details on #6, the 'all professional issue'. Contributors included David Keller, Bob Tucker, Robert Bloch, Ray Palmer, Mack Reynolds and Lilith Lorraine. It was stitched rather than stapled, mimeography was neater than in some of the other issues, and the material was 'well-arranged'. It was also 'not very good'.
Harlan Ellison at least received #6, #7 and #8 together in a bundle, the first issues he'd received in nearly a year-and-a-half, and at 176 pages 'probably the biggest stack ever mailed out at one time outside FAPA or the SAPS'.
It seemed that #11 was the last issue. However, Fanac #74 (May 1961) said that Banks 'suddenly popped back into circulation this week with another issue... He says he intends weekly publication this summer.'
Issue details from Evans-Pavlat Fanzine Index.
