Barry Hall

Barry Hall was a fan and fan artist from Clacton in Essex, UK active in the late 1950s. Alongside Bryan Welham he was one of the leading lights of the Clacton SF Group of 1957–8. He attended Cytricon IV and Brumcon and was a member of OMPA.
Hall was at school in sixth form in 1957 with Welham[2]. That summer they conceived the idea of producing a fanzine. Welham was already in touch Keith Wright of Arcturus and in response to a query about getting a duplicator Peter Rigby offered to sell him one while John Ashcroft provided paper.
The first issue of Perihelion was initially produced in a room above a fish shop owned by Welham's father, appearing a month or two later than its October 1957 cover date. While half the print run went via the usual fannish channels, the remainder was distributed via the school. The original duplicator provided by Rigby, an Emphas, had provided unreliable so Welham and Hall had negotiated the use of the school's machine.
This brought the group to the attention of the local press and an article about the group appeared in the East Essex Gazette, December 13, 1957.
Hall was also a correspondent to prozines such as New Worlds and he and Welham attended a meeting at The Globe. Joy Clarke reviewing Perihelion #2 in Femizine #10 (September 1958) said that 'Barry Hall shows signs of developing into a good cartoonist'. His cartoons also appeared in Ploy.
The final issue of Perihelion appeared in October 1958 when Hall was awaiting the results of an interview for meteorologist training. He produced a single issue of Kactus in 1959 for OMPA just before attending Brumcon at Easter 1959 but he dropped out of OMPA at the end of the year and then disappeared from fandom.
