APA-45
An apa founded in mid-1964 by Pennsylvania fan Richie Benyo, who was the first OE, but fafiated after the first issue due to college pressures. Membership was limited to fans born in 1945 or thereafter. (There was a time when this meant younger fen!) The age limit was dropped in 1974. The apa was down to 8 members and voted to dissolve itself in 1978.
It started big: The first mailing in November 1964 was 13 members producing 222 pages and the second mailing was 187 pages. The activity requirement was at least 6 pages of original material in each mailing, plus at least a 20 page genzine in every other mailing. (Bruce Pelz, who was not eligible to become a member, commented, "It sounds like Burn-Outsville to me, but if they can keep it going it will at least serve to channel the energy neos usually waste trying to get into other APAs.") By the late 60s it was in fine shape: Issue 17 was 322 pages and there were 20 members and 9 people on the wait list. It his mailing 24 in late 1970.
It had the unusual distinction of having its own filk song, set to the tune of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic."
In the late 60s, the APA-45 was the main venue for Minn-StF fanzine publishing.
