Category: Best Cover Artist.
Winner: (tie): Hannes Bok and Ed Emshwiller
The Best Cover Artist category was a one-time category, replaced in 1955 (the next year the Hugos were awarded) with Best Professional Artist. This category has survived.
This first year of the Hugos there was no shortlist of nominees, nor voting by the members of the convention. The winner was chosen by the Philcon II committee.
Presented September 7, 1953 at Philcon II.
Note that this was not the Best Original Artwork Hugo which was awarded during the early ’90s for a single piece, but a body-of-work award.
