Jeannie Smith (born Jeanne Craig MacDougall in Scotland) attended many conventions in the 1940s, ’50s and ’60s, including Worldcons, Michiconferences and Midwestcons, alongside her husband, E. E. “Doc” Smith. In the 1940s, she welcomed members of the Galactic Roamers and visitors to the Slan Shack into her Michigan home.
Robert Heinlein described her as a “beautiful, intelligent, red-haired woman.” The sister of Smith’s college roommate, Allen Scott MacDougall, she married Doc on October 5, 1915, in Boise, Idaho. They had three children: Roderick, Verna and Clarrissa.
After Doc retired in 1957, the couple lived in Clearwater, Florida, in the fall and winter, driving a trailer to Seaside, Oregon, each April, often stopping at cons on their way.
