NAL, an American paperback publisher based in New York, was founded in 1948. It was absorbed into Berkley-Penguin Books USA (a division of Random House).
Its imprints included Signet and Mentor.
Although U.S. distribution represented the major segment of sales, the international market also had an impact on NAL's success.
Signet Books[edit]
Signet’s focus was affordable paperback reprints of classics and scholarly works, as well as popular and pulp fiction. Many SF books were reprinted as Signet paperbacks. Popular SF authors whose books were reprinted as Signet paperbacks in the 1950s included Isaac Asimov, Alfred Bester, James Blish, Arthur C. Clarke, Edmond Hamilton, Robert Heinlein, Wilson Tucker, and A. E. van Vogt.
