(???? –)

David William Hulvey was a Virginia fanzine fan and letterhack active in the 1970s. He was a member of the Southern Fandom Confederation, RAPS and TAPS.

Years later, Darrell Schweitzer admitted in the lettercol of Mimosa 16 (December 1994, p. 54) that he and Robert Whitaker had perpetrated a plot make out that Hulvey was actually a hoax, in order to parody fannish fandom:

Hulvey was a militantly fannish fan of the early ’70s, derived from such then topical sources as Firesign Theatre. He was so stridently anti-sercon that, well, one was tempted to have a little fun with him. My one offhand reference took off. I got several inquiries about it. Years later, I was astonished when someone who I thought had actually known Hulvey asked me, “How much of him were you?”

However, Hulvey was real enough: In Focal Point 32 (August 1971, p. 21), Terry Carr mentioned Hulvey as being at PgHLANGE III, while in Rats! 11 (September 1971, p. 3), Bill Kunkel wrote of traveling to Noreascon, the 1971 Worldcon, with Hulvey:

Bus ride up wasn't bad as I traveled in such fine fannish company as the Katz's, Jay Kinney, Dave Hulvey and (ta daa!) Bob Shaw. Highlites: Dave began discoursing upon such subjects as population control via the extermination of oldsters and vaginal photography (at which point a woman two rows up let fly with a "Why don't you give your mouth a rest!? We don't want to hear about this stuff any more!)

After a brief mention of Hulvey in IGOTS 18, in the next ish (IGOTS 19, March 1998), Ned Brooks wahfedAlexis Gilliland, who says he had a brief visit with Dave Hulvey (that I mentioned in #18) around 1991 and Hulvey had become quite mundane.” And D. Gary Grady supplied Fanac.org with a photo of Hulvey at Disclave 22 in 1978.

Buck Coulson was somewhat suspicious, though, writing in a review of a Hulvey fanzine in Yandro 219 (February 1973, p. 37):

Sunshine Spreader #1. (Dave Hulvey, Rt. 1, Box 198, Harrisonburg VA 22801) Sometimes I wish I knew Hulvey better; I can’t decide if this is serious or a gigantic put-on. (From what I do know of him it could just as easily be either one.) Anyway, ostensibly Dave has now Seen The Light and determined to cease sinning and devote his energies to spreading joy throughout fandom. (If it is serious, Dave, for Christ's sake get off the stuff while you still have a personality left. And don't look for the concealed sarcasm here between parentheses, because if you’re serious, I'm serious.) If it's a put-on, it's a good one.

Hulvey appears to have gafiated by 1980.
