Bertil Mårtensson
(June 12, 1945 – November 4, 2018)
Bertil “Balte” Mårtensson was an active Swedish fan and pro who found fandom in 1961.
His first fanzine was Ogre, published in only two issues; after that he published a few oneshots, and together with John-Henri Holmberg and Mats Dannewitz Linder formed the fannish group WDVF (Witterhetssällskapet Din Vän Fandom), which did a half dozen satirical, humorous oneshots in the late 1960s. They are now considered classics. All three also edited and contributed to SF Forum, a leading fanzine from the Scandinavian SF Association. Bertil Mårtensson also chaired both the Lund Fantasy Fan Society (LF3) and the Southern Sweden Crime Writers' organization.
Professionally, Mårtensson was a professor of philosophy at Lund University and Umeå University; in Umeå, he was also head of the philosophy department. As a writer, he published eight sf novels, a fantasy trilogy, four crime novels, a book of sf poetry and around a hundred short stories, most of them sf.
He died of smoke inhalation after a fire in his apartment.
