Ira Mitchel “Mitch” Thornhill, a longtime Southern fan, was active in fandom since the 1970s, when he lived in New Orleans. He organized the Southern Fried Fandom Gil Gaier Transport Fund in 1978. He belonged to SFPA.

During the ’80s, he lived in Minneapolis and was a member of Minn-Stf. He later moved back to New Orleans.

A native of Mississippi, to which he returned later in life, Mitch attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA. In late 2021, Mitch suffered a series of falls resulting in a spinal cord injury that left him largely paralyzed. It was not promptly diagnosed or treated effectively. Surgery in December 2022 was unsuccessful.
