This first year of the Hugos there was no shortlist of nominees, nor voting by the members of the convention. The winner was chosen by the Philcon II committee.

This category was awarded only in 1953, first year of the Hugos, at Philcon II and was never repeated, though essentially the same category was repeated in 1956 under a different name, the 1956 Best Feature Writer Hugo.
