(For other Octocons, see Octocon (Disambiguation).)
Octocon was a semi-invitational relaxacon held in October in Ohio from 1957 to 2002, for many years during the off-season in the summer-resort town of Sandusky, OH, but in later years near Cincinnati. Sandusky’s Greentree Motor Inn, a frequent venue, was notable for featuring a bowling alley, which fans took advantage of.
The con originated as a collaboration among fans in Detroit, Toledo, Cleveland and Cincinnati, but ultimately came under the auspices of the CFG. It was founded by Lou Tabakow, among others. Attendance was small, under 100 members most years, and this was by design.
The club described Octocon as:
The second of the Cincinnati Fantasy Group's two annual relaxacons, Octocon is held in late (you guessed it) October. Our first -- and the first ever, anywhere, relaxacon -- is Midwestcon, which has a simple motto: "No boring panels, and no long-winded speakers." Octocon has an even simpler one: "Midwestcon is overprogrammed!"
With 38 cons in 45 years, the numbering is screwy.
