(???? – )
Pete Chappell was a UK fan active in the 1950s. He was a founder member of the British Science Fiction Association (BSFA) and by some metrics he was even the founder of the BSFA.
Chappell was a sergeant in one of the armed forces and his address in the first BSFA membership list is c/o Ken Slater. He had been a member of Loncon in 1957 and his first Eastercon was Cytricon IV in 1958. On the Sunday there was a meeting to discuss what to do about falling numbers of fanzines and fans, prompted by an article by Vin¢ Clarke in Zymic #6 the previous December and subsequent discussions between Dave Newman and Norman Shorrock. Newman described the meeting in his OMPAzine, Prodigal:
It was getting towards tea-time when it became obvious that conditions were ripe for something really constructive to come from the meeting ... The matter was more or less taken out of my hands when Pete Chappell got up and framed a tentative motion that some sort of an organisation should be formed. I took this, edited it verbally and presented it to the meeting who adopted it almost unanimously!
There is no evidence that he ever attended another convention. At the BSFA AGM held during the Ronvention of 1962 it was reported that he had donated his collection to the BSFA library.
