Ross Pavlac

(April 10, 1951 - November 12, 1997)

Ross Pavlac was a leading conrunner from the early 1970's through his untimely death. He notably founded the Columbus Light Cavalry (AKA Columbus Cavalry), an irregular corps of fans dedicated to providing emergency assistance to faltering cons. His debut Worldcon venture was a less than successful Columbus in 1976 bid, followed by a major role in the more narrowly defeated Seattle in 1981 bid. He found success, though, with Chicago in 1982 (which he co-chaired) and thereafter was one of the major figures in Chicago convention fandom. He co-chaired Chicon IV, was vice president for facilities at Chicon V and was slated to head the program division at Chicon 2000. He also co-chaired Windycon VIII in 1981 and chaired WindyCon XXIV from his death bed in 1997. He co-chaired Marcon 13 and Marcon XIV with Mark Evans. He worked on many other regionals and Worldcons.

He published Avenging Aardvark's Aerie for Myriad.

He was a member of the original cast of The Mimeo Man.

To the surprise of many who knew him, Ross converted to Evangelical Christianity in his early 30's and became active in Christian Fandom. On a less serious level, he occasionally appeared in public in a blue aardvark costume. His web site, one of the first in fandom, was called "The Avenging Aardvark's Aerie". He was married to fellow fan Diana Pavlac Glyer.
