Ken McIntyre
(February 23, 1911 – August 23, 1968)
Ken McIntyre was a London fan and fan artist whose art appeared professionally in New Worlds, Nebula, and Science Fantasy. He was a regular at British conventions, very popular in fandom, and his thirst for Guinness was legendary. He was made a member of the Order of St. Fantony at Thirdmancon in 1968. After his premature death, the Ken McIntyre Award for fanzine art was created in his honour by Rog Peyton, although it took until 1972.
In Triode2 (March 1955), McIntyre explained that he
First became acquainted with s-f around about 1930, when I acquired a pile of Wonder Stories and Amazings from the old Caledonian Market in King's X.[1] (Since bombed into oblivion) I shall never forget that first thrill, and the wonder of this refreshingly new form of literature... the magic name, Hugo Gernsback, and the hypnotism of Paul's covers, and all those other fascinating artists, Morey, Dold, Wesso, Marchioni, H.V. Brown, and so on, and so I decided that there was nothing I'd like better than to illustrate s-f. Crashed fandom by visiting the White Horse, from whence I learned about CONVENTIONS,... attended the ’52 Con, met Alan Hunter and the F.A.S., and to Alan I tender my most sincere gratitude for any success that has come my way.
An obituary by Archie Mercer (not necessarily correct in all details as he estimated McIntyre's age as "late forties or early fifties") appeared in Vector 51. It gave the cause of death as pancreatitis and mentioned a wife, Ethel; further it said:
Ken had been a member of the BSFA through its whole existence, up to its recent incorporation. […] His name has long been familiar to the world of SF slanted amateur journalism; he was in his time responsible for both written material and (in particular) artwork. In fact he has never been known to refuse a request to illustrate a "fanzine." His paintings have frequently been featured at convention art shows.
