Denny Cowen

Dennis Cowen (not Cowan), is a fan and conrunner from Kettering, UK, active since the early 1950s.

In 1952, he became co-founder with Bill Panter of a fan club in Kettering. In a 1954 letter, he referred to it as the Kettering (Northants) SF Society, but the Kettering Astronautics Society is listed as the organising body of Cytricon I in 1955, implying a change of name and focus.

In 1953, he became the British Representative of Project Fan Club founded by Orville Mosher 'much to my surprise,' and in 1954, he was reported to be gathering information for an Operation Fantast handbook of 'all fan clubs and organisations connected with fan interests'. He attended the Supermancon in 1954.

After the Supermancon, when the 1955 convention has been unilaterally allocated to the London Circle by Ted Tubb, Cowen volunteered to stage it in Kettering and he was the secretary of the resulting Cytricon in 1955.

However, Eric Jones, writing in Sidereal 3.1 claimed that none of the Kettering fans attended Cytricon II the following year, and while Cowen appeared for a very short time on Sunday he was obviously 'just passing thru'. He is not evident in fandom thereafter.

A profile piece in The British Space Fiction Magazine v2#2 from 1955 says,

Dennis is five feet ten inches tall, fair hair and grey eyes. His hobbies: Entomology and general fanning'. Originally from Yorkshire, he worked first in the theatre and later as a bus driver.
