As a young man, Toni had worked his way over to New Zealand as a cook in refugee camps. He then worked as a chef for many years at the St. George Hotel in [[Wellington]], The Quarterdeck in Lower Hutt and The Settlement in Willis Street, Wellington. He loved fishing from his dinghy at Pukerua Bay and he was also very into electronics and ham radio. He started his own business in 1978 as Carecord Electronics Limited in Willis Street, where he worked by himself as an electronic serviceman fixing radios and stereos until his death.

Antonín JiříJoseph Vondruška (who went by both Toni and Tony Vondruška) was a Prague, Czechoslovakia-born New Zealand fan active in the 1950s. He married fellow fan Lynette Mills, an artist, in November 1958. They published The Last Splotch to mark the occasion.

Toni and Lynette had three children, Marie, Antonin and Bozenka, before separating in the late 1980s or early ’90s.
