Theron Raines, a onetime fan originally from Arkansas, belonged to the DFF in the 1940s.
He moved to New York and became a literary agent representing the sf clients of the Ann Elmo Agency and later had his own agency, Raines & Raines, beginning in 1961. His clients included Harlan Ellison, who said Raines was “the most reserved person I know, who never comments too favorably about my stf” (Cry 111, January 1958), and Joe Hensley, who wrote of him, “Theron was an exceedingly fine person. In New York he took me to dinner and I bought him drinks. He wore tweed clothes and had a sort of Yale accent” (Yandro 204, February 1971).
Raines wrote one sf novel, The Singing: A Fable about What Makes us Human (1988), and edited two issues of Startling Stories in 1955.
