Race Mathews
(March 27, 1935 – )
A founding member of the Melbourne Science Fiction Club in 1952 and holder of its membership number 1. He was a member of the Amateur Fantasy Publications of Australia. He reported that he sold off his collection to fund the courtship of his wife and mostly gafiated in 1955 following his marriage.
He went into politics and was Minister for the Police and Emergency Services for the State of Victoria during Aussiecon 2 (1985), where he gave the opening address on fandom. The speech can be found at File 770 57, p. 16 (part 1) and File 770 58, p. 2 p15 (part 2). Wikipedia and Fanlore also say he opened Aussiecon 1 when he was just a member of federal parliament.
He became revenant after he left politics in 1993.
