The Torbay Happy Fan and Lampshade Makers' Society was reportedly the only sf club in Torquay, a seaside town in Devon in the south-west of England. In Bias Binding #2 (June 1955) the membership was given as Nigel Lindsay (leader), 'Helen Highwater'[1] (Chief Lampshade Maker), Mike Wallace (resident 220 miles away in Leicester), and Ron Bennett's pet elephant, Cecil. Its name is given as The Torquay Happy Fan and Lampshade Makers' Society in some sources and that is where Lindsay lived, but he himself uses Torbay[2].

Now & Then #4 (June 1955), 'the proceedings of the Romiley Fan Veterans & Scottish Dancing Society', reported that in the aftermath of its first AGM::

... wild and persistent rumours are flying round the village. One of these is that there is a move to merge all the active fan groups into a national amalgamation to be known as the Romiley, Torbay, & London Scottish Dancing, Lampshade Makers, Happy Fan Veterans & Promiscuous Snogging Society, with HQ at Belfast.

Bias Binding #2 purported to be the official organ of the (subtly different) Torbay, Romiley, & London Scottish Dancing, Lampshade Makers, Happy Fan Veterans & Promiscuous Snogging Society.

____

  1. At the risk of stating the obvious, not a real person.
  2. The pedantic detail is that Torbay is a unitary authority with a borough status in the ceremonial county of Devon, England. It includes the towns of Torquay, Paignton and Brixham.

Club 1954????
This is a club page. Please extend it by adding information about when and where the club met, when and by whom it was founded, how long it was active, notable accomplishments, well-known members, clubzines, any conventions it ran, external links to the club's website, other club pages, etc.

When there's a floreat (Fl.), this indicates the time or times for which we have found evidence that the club existed. This is probably not going to represent the club's full lifetime, so please update it if you can!
