(September 3, 1926 -- November 28, 2016)

Dr. Paul A. Carter was an historian and writer who began publishing SF with "The Last Objective" in Astounding (August, 1946). His occasional stories over the next decades showed that he could have made writing his primary career. In his critical study The Creation of Tomorrow: Fifty Years of Magazine Science Fiction (1977) he demonstrated an intimate knowledge of the field.

With Gregory Benford he published a short novel, Iceborn (in Synergy 3, 1989).

He was a member of First Fandom and attended Philcon. A tribute appeared in Scientifiction: The First Fandom Report (New Series, #50), 4th Quarter, 2016.
