Dr. Paul A. Carter was a social historian and writer who began publishing SF with "The Last Objective" in Astounding (August, 1946). His occasional stories over the next decades showed that he could have made writing his primary career. He won the first Lloyd Eaton Memorial Award for his critical study, The Creation of Tomorrow: Fifty Years of Magazine Science Fiction (1977). With Gregory Benford he published a short novel, Iceborn (in Synergy 3, 1989).
