William Dellenback
(March 7, 1917 – August 18, 2000)
William H. Dellenback was a very early Chicago fan. He was member #5 of the Science Fiction League after it was announced in May 1934. For being among the first tensome to sign up, William got his name in the July ’34 issue of Wonder Stories, and, having sent appropriate letters first to the prozine and then to Dr. David H. Keller, received an autographed letter and the original manuscript of “The Fighting Husband” from the good doctor, as announced in the November 1934 issue.
He was a member of the Chicago chapter of the Science Fiction League and a co-editor of its clubzine, The Fourteen Leaflet. With two other members, Jack Darrow and Otto Binder, he planned to visit New York in the summer of 1935 to meet members of the New York chapter of the SFL. Charles D. Hornig planned a chapter meeting to take place at the offices of Wonder Stories, but the Chicago delegates arrived a day late and missed the meeting, instead visiting with Hornig, Mort Weissinger and Julius Schwartz. Had they arrived on time, this would have been a candidate for being the First Science Fiction Convention.
Dellenback attended Nycon 1, the first Worldcon in 1939.
