Reginald Bretnor (born Alfred Reginald Kahn) was a Russian-born American SF author and critic who worked between the 1950s and 1980s. Most of his fiction was in short story form.
Under the pseudonym Grendel Briarton (an anagram of Reginald Bretnor), he published a series of over a hundred SF-themed shaggy-dog vignettes featuring the time-traveling hero Ferdinand Feghoot. They have been collected by Mirage Press.
His Papa Schimmelhorn story "The Gnurrs Come from the Voodvork Out" (F&SF, Winter-Spring 1950) was responsible for a minor fannish catchphrase. Bretnor’s collaboration with Kris Neville, “Gratitude Guaranteed” (F&SF, August 1953), inspired a 1950s fannish fad for pomes about Cuddlypets.
Some of his critical work was published by Advent. He compiled a series of “symposium” books featuring pros talking about sf.
