Sigvard Östlund, a Stockholm fan, was a major collector of British and U.S. sf even before Swedish fandom existed. Probably as early as 1951, he became the third member of the Stockholm club Futura, having learned of its existence from fans abroad who had heard of it from one of its founders.

Östlund attended Festivention, a convention in London in 1951, and in 1952 was elected to the committee that judged the International Fantasy Award. He wrote what may well have been the first presentation of Swedish fandom in any foreign fanzine; his essay "Science Fiction in Sweden" was published in Ron Smith's fanzine Inside and Science Fiction Advertiser 12, November 1955.
