Smofcon 3 was held December 5-7, 1986 at the Lowell Hilton in Lowell, MA and was probably responsible for making Smofcon a continuing convention rather than the one-shot it looked like after the disaster of Smofcon 2. It was sponsored by MCFI and chaired by Mark Olson. It had 137 members.
The ice-breaker was If I Ran The Z/o/o/ Con, con-running game invented by Leslie Turek, Mark Olson, Priscilla Olson and Alexis Layton which is still available form NESFA Press.
The convention's theme was "Brainstorming Noreascon 3". MCFI had just won the right to run Noreascon 3, the 1989 Worldcon and offered Smofcon 3 as an opportunity for a wide range of con-runners to brainstorm how N3 could be a great Worldcon. Detailed notes were taken and the results were edited by Aron Insinga and published by MCFI (and are still available from NESFA Press.)
