Fencon VIII (which was also DeepSouthCon 49) was a convention held from September 23-25, 2011 at the Crowne Plaza North Dallas in Addison, Texas. Gail Carriger was GoH, Joe Bethancourt was Music GoH, Vincent Di Fate was Artist GoH, Les Johnson was Science GoH, Steven H Silver was Fan GoH. Bradley Denton was Toastmaster. The con had the theme "Southern Steam." Membership was about 900 and it was chaired by Julie Barrett.

Vincent di Fate was unable to attend in person, but participated via internet. The guest list was augmented by special guests Stephan Martiniere and Lou Anders.

Brad W. Foster won the Rebel Award and Selena Rosen won the Phoenix Award. The Rubble Award went to Bill Parker "for bringing the Worldcon (LoneStarCon 3) (and two years of work) to Southern fandom."

The one-shot "It's Bigger in Texas" was produced at the con.
