A British Hard SF writer with a PhD in Engineering. His first published story -- from his important Xeelee Sequence -- was in Interzone in 1987. His books tend to be hard sf. Besides the large amount of short and novel-length SF on his own, he has collaborated with Arthur C. Clarke and Terry Pratchett. Since 2009 he has been a judge for the Sidewise Award.
