John Fairley
(???? – )
John Fairley was a fan from Spennymoor in County Durham around 1960 and perhaps later. He joined the BSFA in 1959 and attended the BSFA Convention, 1960 in London. Rather embarrassingly as we don't know much about him, even his name is a bit uncertain. John Fairley or J. Fairley is mentioned in Vector but Archie Mercer in Cactus 5 gave his surname as Fairlie (which is the older Scottish form). Mercer may of course be correct but if so then Vector would be wrong at least three times.
In 1981, Matrix 35 and 37 brought a small ad from "Mr. [sic!] J. Fairley, Keighley, West Yorkshire", intriguingly looking for "Name and address of person in Huddersfield area who bought SF collection about 5 years ago."
wikipedia:John Fairley (1938 – ) was a producer at Yorkshire Television, responsible for Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World and co-author of several books based on it (this was mentioned in later Matrixes but not in a context that would suggest his fannish history). He grew up in Liverpool, studied at Oxford and now keeps racehorses in or near Malton, North Yorkshire.
It is possible that the latter two are the same person, but it seems unlikely he would have lived in Spennymoor (where the name Fairley is long attested, unlike Fairlie).
