Jill Adams
(July 31, 1933 – 1980)
Gillian T. “Jill” Adams was a fan from Southampton, U.K., active from at least 1957 to the 1970s, making an impression on Archie Mercer and others at Loncon I for "apparently being able to go without sleep altogether for several nights on the trot and still look just as fresh as at the beginning." She was described by Archie Mercer and Norm Shorrock as being one of those people who stay in the background and work hard to keep things running.
This might have helped in her long involvement in the running of the BSFA from its inauguration in 1958 (she was member #12), including stints as both Treasurer and Secretary. She was listed as a council member as late as 1975. She also belonged to the London Circle.
In 1962 Archie Mercer handed her as BSFA secretary the £15 15s 10d in the Doc Weir Memorial Fund. She used it to buy a silver communion cup from a shop in Southampton. This became the Doc Weir Award and was first presented in 1963. Adams herself won the Award in 1972.
