(July 8, 1930 – August 9, 2009)

Detroit, MI, fan George Henry Young was the first fan to wear a propeller beanie at a con (Torcon, the 1948 Worldcon).

A member of the Misfits, he coined that nickname for the Michigan Science Fiction Society. He edited the 17th World Science Fiction Convention (Detention) program book. George might give you a Hurt Look Real Soon Now. He attended Midwestcon 1 and was one of the organizers of Travelcon to the Solacon.

According to Dick Eney in Fancyclopedia 2, Young was so disturbed by rumors of racism in fandom, that when drafting the MSFS Constitution, he began the document with the declaration: "Membership is open to all humans, BEMs, and intelligent entities...."

He was married, for a time, to Mary Southworth; they had four children. When he died in 2009, his obituary listed nine children.
