Archie Roy
(24 June 1924 – December 27, 2012)
Archie Edmiston Roy was Professor Emeritus of Astronomy in the University of Glasgow. He was a member of the British Interplanetary Society and may have been a member of the Caledonian SF Group in the 1960s.
Donald Malcolm wrote an article, 'Phantom Fandom', in the programme book for Faircon '78. This discussed the membership of the Caledonian SF Group of the 1960s, and mentioned one A. E. Roy and I. F. Clarke although, according to Rob Hansen writing in Then, Malcolm 'seemed unsure' about them. It seems at least plausible that A. E. Roy is Archie Edmiston Roy although we're no nearer knowing whether he was in fact a member of the group or had any involvement with fandom at that point.
Roy contributed a number of non-fiction articles to prozines including the twelve-part 'The Way to the Planets' series for Authentic Science Fiction (June 1955-May 1956). Other articles appeared in Astounding and New Worlds, some as collaborations with Donald Malcolm under the joint pseudonym Roy Malcolm. He wrote half a dozen sf adventure novels which the SFE acclaimed as 'mostly unremarkable'.
Roy was slated to be one of the guests at Hogmanaycon at new year 2000–1 but the convention was cancelled around October 2000.
