The 1979 GUFF race was the first for this fan fund. It was to send an Australian or NZ fan north to Seacon '79. The candidates were John Foyster, John Alderson and Eric Lindsay (who later asked fans not to vote for him). See The Northern Guffblower.
The GUFF administrator, Dave Langford reported that voting was:
- John Foyster -- 65
- John Alderson -- 44
- Eric Lindsay -- 18
There were 127 votes, 23 from the UK and US and 104 from Australia.
Foyster published a trip report, Stranger in Stranger Lands in 1996.
