(b. October 19, 1948)

Jerry Kaufman has been a fan writer and editor, convention fan, and book reader and lives in the Seattle area. His early fanac was in Cleveland, Ohio, where he attended the 1966 Worldcon, Tricon and started a club. Ben Jason and Charles Wells introduced him to the history and culture of fandom. He met Suzanne Tompkins at Marcon in 1968, and the two began dating at conventions.

He moved to New York in 1971, where he lived in The Avocado Pit until Tompkins moved to New York and they got their own apartment. Here Kaufman started publishing his first fanzine, The Spanish Inquisition, for the Cinema Amateur Press Association. (After two issues, he and Tompkins turned it into a genzine.) Kaufman and Tompkins separated, Jerry moved into the Cinemansion (with Joe Siclari; after a year, Stu Shiffman replaced Joe.) Kaufman and Tompkins reunited and moved to Seattle in the fall of 1977/spring of 1978, where they were founder members of the Vanguard monthly party group, still meeting today.

His con committee activities include: Corflu 5 (Seattle, 1988), Corflatch (Corflu 17, 2000), Corflu 26, and Potlatch whenever it's in Seattle. He published the final issue of Innuendo and was a member of Cascade Regional Amateur Press Association, and of CAPRA (of which he was OE). He founded the bi-weekly Fanoclast APA, APA-Q. (The Q was for "Queens," where meetings in the mid-1970s took place.) He was a member of the Omnivores and founded the Gastronomes.

He was DUFF Winner in 1983, and was nominated for the 1977 Best Fanzine Hugo. (While on his DUFF trip to Syncon '83, they created an unfortunately successful hoax bid, Seattle in '85 for the 1985 Australian Natcon.) He published a DUFF trip report in 1988, entitled Kaufman Coast to Coast.

Other fanac: With Donald Keller, founded and ran Serconia Press, publisher of criticism and memoirs of the SF field; served on the Board of Directors of the Clarion West writers workshop; served as Jurist for the James Tiptree, Jr. Memorial Award.

He is married to co-editor Suzanne Tompkins.
