The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a campy 1975 musical film about the adventures of two innocent mundanes who stumble into a creepy, “Frankenstein place” mansion full of alien perverts, was eagerly embraced by fandom well before it became a cult classic with its own rituals.
Fans reveled in the film’s recursive science fiction references, showings of the film featured at many cons, the song “The Time Warp” quickly became a must at convention dances, and hall costumes based on the characters were frequently seen until the end of the century.
The movie was based on an earlier stage musical, The Rocky Horror Show, but it was the film that captured fandom’s attention.
