Janet Kagan (née Megson), a New York pro and fan, was a member of the Fantasy and Science Fiction Society of Columbia University in the ’60s, for which she published Akos.
She married fellow fan Ricky Kagan. In the 1970s, she had a constant supply of kittens available for adoption, which New York fandom dubbed “Kagan-Kittens.”
Professionally, she began publishing in 1982 with the story "Faith of the Month" and went on to win the 1993 Best Novelette Hugo for her story "The Nutcracker Coup." Three of her novelettes, "The Nutcracker Coup," "Getting the Bugs Out," and "The Loch Moose Monster" also won the Asimov's Reader Poll.
