Dean Benjamin McLaughlin, Jr., is an Ann Arbor SF fan and writer. He was involved in Michigan fandom, a member of the Misfits, on the Detention (the 1959 Worldcon) committee, and later, part of the Stilyagi Air Corps.

His best-known work is the novella "Hawk Among the Sparrows" (1968), which was nominated for the 1969 Best Novella Hugo as well as a Nebula. It concerns a late-20th century fighter plane which travels through time, and tries to contend with World War I aircraft. Other works include Dawn (1980), a novel inspired by Isaac Asimov's "Nightfall." He had an excellent novella, "Tenbrook of Mars," in the July/August 2008 issue of Analog.
