Over the years, several editors have published anthologies that purport to contain the best short science fiction, fantasy, or horror from the previous years. Naturally, being subjective, the contents of any of these books is open to debate.
Some of the major series include:
- Terry Carr
- Lester del Rey
- Gardner Dozois: The Year's Best Science Fiction, 1984–2018
- David G. Hartwell (some with Kathryn Cramer): Year's Best SF, 1996–2013 and Year's Best Fantasy 2001-2008
- Arthur W. Saha and Donald A. Wollheim: The Annual World's Best Science Fiction, 1972–1990
