Mike Scantlebury

Mike Scantlebury was a fan from Bristol and later Manchester active from the 1960s into at least the 1980s.
He was a member of the Bristol and District Group (BaD) in the 1960s, likely from about 1967. He contributed to the clubzine Badinage #4 (April 1968) and an editorial comment on a letter from Chas Legg in the same issue suggests that an article by 'George Scantlebury' in Badinage #3 (December 1967) had been by him as well. The name 'George' may have been a BaD Group in-joke; as a further complication, he was also nicknameed 'Doof' around this time. In the Badinage contribution to the Thirdmancon combozine (also 1968) he is described by Beryl Mercer as:
... still at school. He looks even younger than he is, mainly because of his very fair hair and pink, scrubbed-looking face. Usually he’s very quiet at meetings, but when he does speak, he often demonstrates a surprisingly mature dry wit.
According to Mercer, he hoped to attend the convention, the 1968 Eastercon. It's not known if he did.
He contributed a story to Bryn Fortey's Relativity #3 (February 1969) and a poem to fellow former BaD member, Graham Boak's Cynic #1 (July 1970).
He may have gafiated for a while in the early 1970s. He moved to Manchester in 1974 and Checkpoint #63 (December 1975) reported that he and future fanzine co-editor Paul Kincaid were new member of the MaD Group in Manchester. Writing in Wallbanger #1 (August 1978) about Skycon, the 1978 Eastercon, Kincaid said that he had known Scantlebury 'virtually since I entered fandom'. He also cited BaD Group veteran Simone Walsh, encountering Scantlebury at the same Eastercon, giving the impression she hadn't seen Scantlebury for a long time. She also explained the 'Doof' nickname, 'Because he'd do fer anything'.
Scantlebury's own fanzine publishing took place in the late-1970s and early-1980s. He was a member of various conventions including Seacon '79 and Conspiracy '87.
Latterly he is the author of two series of crime/thriller novels.
