The Rocky Horror Picture Show, a campy 1975 musical film about the adventures of two innocent mundanes who stumble into a creepy, “Frankenstein place” mansion full of alien perverts, was eagerly embraced by fandom well before it became a cult classic with its own rituals.
Fans reveled in the film’s recursive science fiction references, showings of the film featured at many cons, the song “Time Warp” quickly became a must at convention dances, and hall costumes based on the characters were frequently seen until the end of the century.
The movie was closely based on a 1973 stage musical, The Rocky Horror Show, but it was the film that captured fandom’s attention.
