Al von Ruff is the founder, with Ahasuerus, of the crowd-sourced bibliographic website Internet Speculative Fiction Database, launched in 1995 from beginnings in the Usenet group rec.arts.sf.written.

In his day job, von Ruff is Executive Director of Premium Platform Software and Innovation for Motorola Mobility (a Lenovo Company) in Chicago.
