Bill "The Galactic" Fesselmeyer served on the bid committee and concom of MidAmeriCon, the 1976 Worldcon in Kansas City. WSFS business meeting wrangling at the time inspired him to pen “How the GRINCH Stole Worldcon,” a classic piece of smoffish faan fiction about the demise of fandom, told from a far-future perspective.
It first appeared in MidAmeriCon’s second progress report (1975), and has been reprinted in Spirits of Things Past 3 (2001, online) and the first PR for MidAmeriCon 2 (2015 online).
