Wimpy Zone

The Central Zone in the former Worldcon bid rotation plan, largely the Midwest. At the 1984 Worldcon Business Meeting, Ben Yalow advocated switching to a two-zone (Eastern and Western) rotation system to eliminate what he called this "wimpy zone."
After the phrase was widely quoted in newszines by fans who had taken notes at the meeting (prompting a huge outcry from Midwestern fandom) Yalow tried to claim he had really said, "in order to eliminate wimpy bids," but by then put-upon fans from the zone had started wearing t-shirts proclaiming, "Resident of the Wimpy Zone: I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a Worldcon today."
The slight to Midwestern fandom helped to escalate the TAFF Wars and all fandom was plunged into war.
