Mike Zaharakis

(January 18, 1947 – July 6, 1984)

Michael George Zaharakis (aka Raki) was a fan active mainly in the 1960 and ’70s. He became a fan while stationed in the Air Force in Minot, North Dakota.

In Portland, Oregon, he was a founder of the Society of Strangers science fiction club. He was a member of ValAPA, TAPS, and the N3F, at one time serving on the N3F Directorate. He later moved to California.

He married Dian Cooper in 1967, but they later divorced. Mike was a member of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and an ordained bishop in the Antiochian Orthodox Church. In 1970, he handled publicity for the week long, state-sponsored Vortex-1 music festival in McIver State Park near Escatada, Oregon. He died in Oaxaca, Mexico.
