Marty Gear was a long-time Baltimore fan who was a member of BSFS, and chaired Balticon 21 in 1987 and CostumeCon 3 in 1985 and co-chaired CostumeCon 27 in 2009. He served on the BSFS Board of Directors, and was coordinator of the Jack L. Chalker Young Writer's Contest. He was married to Bobby Gear and with her was nominated for the 1986 Best Fanzine Hugo for the Greater Columbia Fantasy Costumers Guild Newsletter.

He was deeply involved with costuming. He founded the Greater Columbia Fantasy Costumers' Guild and was active in the International Costumer's Guild, serving as its first Executive Director. He MCed nearly every Balticon masquerade since 1981 and worked on numerous other conventions. As an MC, he was famous for vamping with vampire jokes.
