The British Fantasy Awards were established in 1971 by the British Fantasy Society to honor the best fantasy and horror works of the year.
The award for Best Novel was established in memory of United States writer/editor/publisher August Derleth, with the physical award consisting of a statuette of the god Cthulhu (from the works of H. P. Lovecraft), made of white ivory and supported upon a wooden base. The first winner of this award was The Knight of the Swords by Michael Moorcock.
The Sydney J. Bounds Award for Best Newcomer was created in 2007, replacing the Icarus Award which was given out between the years 1988 and 1995, and the Best Newcomer Award, which was given out in 2007 and 2008.
The Society's Special Award, which has been given out most years since 1973, was renamed the Karl Edward Wagner Award in 1997.
Starting in 2012, the Best Novel award was split into the August Derleth Award for Best Horror Novel and the Robert Holdstock Award for Best Fantasy Novel.
