Albert “Al” Trestrail attended the 1941 Michiconference with his wife, Verna Smith Trestrail, and father-in-law, author E. E. "Doc" Smith. He accompanied Verna to quite a few other cons throughout their long married life. Al was a member of the Science Fiction Oral History Association and contributed by recording events at conventions between 1986 and 1992.

The couple wed in 1937, when Verna was just 16, and were together till her death in 1994, living in Michigan and then Indiana. They had four children.
